Plextek: electronics engineering and specialist product development
Plextek combines electronics consultancy, reusable sensing platforms and manufacturing services. Its accounts and named partnerships show how those activities differ commercially.
Plextek sits between an electronics consultancy and a product supplier. A customer can commission engineering work, use one of its reusable sensing platforms, or ask it to take a design into production. That combination matters more than a broad description of the company as a defence technology business: different customers are buying expertise, intellectual property, hardware or a continuing manufacturing relationship.
The business has roots in telecommunications and now presents work across defence, space, industry, healthcare and security. Its recent public record connects those markets through practical electronics development, including a ClearSpace research programme and a nuclear infrastructure monitoring trial. The financial record also shows that manufacturing can change its revenue mix substantially from one year to the next.
Which Plextek business is being profiled?
The current head office page names Plextek Services Limited, based at Great Chesterford, near Cambridge. Companies House identifies it as private company 09826669, incorporated on 15 October 2015. That legal date differs from the company's 1989 business origin, when it began providing electronics and communications design services to the mobile telecommunications market.
The active control register names Colin Richard Smithers, Ian Andrew Murphy and Timothy Jackson. Each is recorded in the band above 25% and no more than 50% of shares and voting rights. Those bands establish material ownership interests without disclosing exact percentages.
Names from the original business require care. In July 2020, PRFI explained that it was renaming Plextek RFI to reduce confusion; it had been a separate limited company since 2015 while sharing a site with Plextek Services. A historical Plextek connection therefore does not automatically place a business, customer or product inside today's trading company.
What its financial figures actually measure
The audited consolidated accounts for the year ended 31 March 2025 report:

The remaining turnover category was materials and expenses recharged. Total turnover increased from £12,467,843, while design and consultancy declined from £10,947,944. Manufacturing services increased from £329,520. The group reported an operating profit of £1,529,869.
Those movements suggest a more useful commercial reading than a single growth percentage. The year combined a smaller consultancy revenue line with substantially more manufacturing income. A supplier assessing Plextek's workload would want to understand the durability of production programmes as well as its engineering pipeline. The employee figures are annual averages, not a September 2026 headcount.
Reusable platforms change the engineering proposition
The PLX-T60 radar platform is offered both as an existing module for integration and as a starting point for customer-specific development. That gives Plextek a route to sell more than consultancy hours: part of a project's foundation already exists, while the customer's application can still require substantial adaptation.
Texas Instruments lists the platform as a third-party tool using its radar technology. The listing directs design support to Plextek and explicitly distinguishes inclusion from endorsement or a warranty. Commercially, it identifies the semiconductor ecosystem and the responsible engineering partner; it does not establish customer acceptance of a finished system.
Plextek also offers a configurable IoT framework comprising sensor nodes, gateways and a cloud component. Its stated applications include condition monitoring, asset tracking and predictive maintenance. This broadens the customer discussion from an individual sensing device to the flow of data into a usable application.
The important comparison is between buying a standard product and commissioning a platform adaptation. The latter can offer greater control over the finished product, but ownership of custom work, maintenance obligations and future component changes need to be settled in the commercial agreement.
The company's history also records its 2021 acquisition of MISPEC software from FanField. At a business level, that adds a modelling software asset to the services story. It illustrates how a consultancy can retain or acquire intellectual property that supports later projects, rather than relying exclusively on bespoke assignments. The company history does not disclose the purchase price or a separate software revenue line, so MISPEC cannot be valued from the published turnover table.
For an engineering customer, the resulting scope should specify whether the deliverable is a design package, a supported module, software access or continuing supply. Each creates a different dependency after development ends.
From design work to manufactured products
Plextek's production and manufacturing offer covers proof of concept, product realisation, quality assurance and technical services. It describes responsibility extending to materials, documentation and production preparation, for both specialist batches and larger volume products.
For a customer without an extensive internal electronics team, continuity between design and production can reduce the number of organisational handovers. For a customer with established factories, the useful question is narrower: which activities should remain with the design partner, and which should transfer into the customer's own supply chain?
BDI's semiconductor supply-chain analysis provides the wider context. A locally managed design project can still depend on components and manufacturing relationships elsewhere. Plextek's value should therefore be assessed through its actual design responsibility and support arrangements, rather than through an assumption that the location of its head office describes every production input.
Named projects show different stages of adoption
On 7 May 2025, ClearSpace announced completion of phase two of CLEAR, naming Plextek among its partners. The work concerned technology maturation for a UK active debris removal mission, with Plextek contributing radar development.
That is a meaningful customer-side reference: the programme leader identifies the company and the completed phase. It is evidence of a development relationship, rather than a claim that the eventual space mission has already flown. For another spacecraft company, the relevant signal is experience working within a multidisciplinary mission consortium.
A separate Plextek case study describes integrating its sensors with Espanaro's Consilium platform for a Nuclear Decommissioning Authority-related monitoring project. The company reports trial results and describes a subsequent 12-month site evaluation as the next step. The public account supports an integration and evaluation reference, while leaving broader deployment and quantified long-term benefits to later evidence.
These projects expose two routes to market: supplying a subsystem to a mission company and joining a security platform provider on infrastructure work. Neither requires Plextek to become the operator of the complete end service.
Defence access and supplier credentials
Plextek's DDAD announcement says it secured a place on the Ministry of Defence framework with Teleplan Forsberg and Nexor as specialist partners. The £180 million figure describes the framework, not Plextek's awarded revenue. Its commercial relevance is the team's position to compete for subsequent work and the complementary capabilities brought by the partners.
The company's quality page distinguishes certifications it says it holds from standards it says it works to. For example, its wording for AS9100 is a working standard, whereas ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 are presented as certifications. Maintaining that distinction avoids turning a supplier's general quality statement into a stronger credential than it publishes.
Plextek consequently belongs in a comparison of specialist engineering partners with reusable technology and production capability. BDI's Brolis profile covers a different place in the sensing supply chain. The useful comparison concerns product ownership, integration responsibility and customer evidence, not an interchangeable ranking of all businesses associated with sensors.

Company, partner and registry pages were read publicly. FY2025 consolidated accounts were read through ordinary unauthenticated Companies House iXBRL HTTP 200 after the web reader's document link failed; turnover note 4 and employees note 8 distinguish group and parent. DDAD and CLEAR company article bodies were read from ordinary public HTTP 200 pages where the text reader exposed mostly navigation. Nuclear monitoring is a vendor-described trial with further evaluation, not a completed rollout. No product performance specifications, contract revenue attribution or exact founder percentages inferred.
