Forterra: vehicle autonomy and the route through industrial partners

Forterra combines vehicle autonomy, fleet-management software and communications, with goTenna ownership and a Kalmar partnership whose current production timetable extends into 2027.

Forterra develops vehicle autonomy and the software and communications products that surround it. Its business can enter a programme through an established vehicle manufacturer, as it does with Kalmar, or through more direct work on autonomous systems for government customers. Understanding which role it occupies is essential to interpreting its announcements.

The company is headquartered in Clarksburg, Maryland. Its corporate history traces its origins to Robotic Research, founded by Alberto Lacaze in 2002. Josh Araujo is chief executive; Lacaze is identified as president and board chair. Araujo's May 2024 letter explains that the Forterra name was introduced earlier that year.

The current company is consequently older than its present brand. Its product range has also broadened: AutoDrive remains the vehicle-autonomy foundation, while TerraLink, Vektor and the acquired goTenna business extend its role into user interfaces and communications.

The product family around AutoDrive

AutoDrive is Forterra's autonomous-driving platform. The company markets it for integration with different vehicles and for applications extending from defense to distribution centres, ports and other industrial settings. The public page identifies a range of integrated platforms, but its aggregate marketing counters do not disclose the terms or revenue associated with each relationship.

For a vehicle manufacturer, the proposition is to incorporate autonomy without developing every part of that capability internally. The manufacturer can retain responsibility for the vehicle and its established customer channel, while Forterra supplies an important part of the software and systems integration.

This arrangement has consequences after the first vehicle is delivered. The parties need to coordinate software changes, replacement components and customer support. A successful initial integration is therefore the beginning of a product relationship, rather than evidence that all later engineering work has disappeared.

TerraLink is presented as the vehicle-management and operator-interface layer. Its commercial relevance is the relationship between individual vehicles and the organisation overseeing a fleet. A customer may value a consistent interface across equipment even where the underlying vehicles come from different manufacturers.

Vektor addresses communications and data exchange across different network connections. This is another distinct product role: it supports the movement of information between systems rather than manufacturing the vehicle itself. The public descriptions support a broader systems offer, but do not establish that every customer buys every module.

goTenna changed the ownership picture

On 9 October 2025, Forterra announced its acquisition of goTenna. The acquired company supplies mesh-networking products used in government, public safety and other settings. Forterra described the transaction as an extension of its communications capabilities.

The release states that goTenna chief executive Ari Schuler would become president of goTenna, with no other personnel or title changes as part of the transaction. It does not disclose the purchase price. The acquisition should be reflected in any ownership analysis: goTenna is a business within Forterra's expanded organisation in the reviewed record, rather than merely an unrelated partner logo.

Commercially, the transaction can provide Forterra with an existing product family and customer relationships alongside its vehicle work. It can also make Forterra relevant to buyers whose immediate need is communications rather than autonomy. Whether those relationships produce substantial cross-selling is a separate question for future sales evidence.

For suppliers already working with goTenna, the material issue is who controls product development and commercial decisions after the acquisition. For customers evaluating a larger Forterra package, the benefit proposed by the company is more coordination across its own products. Neither proposition requires assuming that all of the acquired company's customers are also vehicle-autonomy customers.

Kalmar shows the OEM route clearly

Kalmar and Forterra's partnership is especially useful because the vehicle manufacturer publishes its own description. At the April 2025 AutoTT unveiling, Kalmar described integrating Forterra's AutoDrive with its terminal tractor and factory-built vehicle-control system.

The announcement placed the product in distribution centres, container terminals and industrial yards. It said the partnership began in March 2024 and that the vehicle was undergoing further testing. At that time, Kalmar anticipated full production in late 2026.

The current global AutoTT page gives a different timetable. It says live pilots at customer sites are underway and commercial availability of the Ottawa T2 AutoTT is planned for 2027, followed by electric variants. Older regional pages still retain 2026 language, so the current global page is the better reference for this profile's review date.

This is a meaningful distinction between a partnership announcement and a product available at commercial scale. Pilots can support development and customer learning while the broader release remains ahead. The public page does not name the pilot customers or report production sales volumes.

The division of roles is equally important. Kalmar supplies the vehicle platform and its fleet-management environment; Forterra supplies the autonomy platform being integrated into it. A terminal operator's purchasing decision concerns the complete supported product. Forterra's opportunity is linked to that product's adoption, but Kalmar's entire tractor business is not Forterra revenue.

Government programme evidence

Forterra's 11 August 2026 announcement reports selection as one of six vendors for the Army's Infantry Last Tactical Mile initiative. The stated requirement concerns production-ready prototypes for logistics and related support tasks.

The announcement identifies AutoDrive and Vektor as the company's contributions. It also reports that Forterra had produced and delivered 105 Lancer vehicles under a US government programme for Ukraine. That delivery statement is attributed to the company; the reviewed release does not publish an underlying order value or an independent delivery-acceptance record.

For a business reader, the two statements occupy different stages. The Lancer passage concerns reported past deliveries. The ILTM passage concerns selection for another initiative involving multiple vendors. Combining them into a claim that Forterra had already won a sole-source production fleet would overstate the announcement.

Financing, employees and financial limits

Forterra's November 2025 Series C announcement reports $238 million comprising equity and debt. Moore Strategic Ventures led the round. The company names a range of new and existing investors and specifically says Crescent Cove supplied both equity and debt.

The financing supports the picture of a private business expanding its product and industrial capacity. It does not reveal a complete shareholding table or an annual turnover figure. The whole $238 million should not be described as equity, and it should not be combined with announced government contract amounts to estimate revenue.

A current total employee count was not verified in the reviewed primary sources. The company's disclosed offices and leadership appointments show organisational breadth but are not a substitute for a measured workforce figure. Financial results for other organisations named Forterra, including the UK building-products company, do not belong to this business.

What would demonstrate a stronger commercial position

Forterra's route through industrial partners can extend its reach beyond customers it serves directly. That model becomes more persuasive when a partner moves from integration and pilots to a supported product with repeat purchasing.

For Forterra, the most useful follow-up evidence will be named partner products entering routine service, repeat orders and clear reporting of the acquired communications business. The present record supports a company extending from driving software into a wider product environment, with specific OEM and government relationships whose commercial stages remain different.

Public Forterra corporate, product, financing, acquisition and programme releases and Kalmar's own product and launch pages were read. Kalmar's global page now targets 2027 commercial availability while older regional pages retain 2026; the profile uses the global page and distinguishes ongoing pilots. Army selection and delivery claims remain attributed to Forterra. No annual revenue, current employee total or complete private ownership table was verified; unrelated Forterra building-products and land-conservation entities were excluded.
