Vannevar Labs: intelligence software and customer-led engineering

Vannevar’s public engineering accounts describe a move from Decrypt toward several products and shared infrastructure, with customer-facing engineers shaping development.

Vannevar Labs is a US intelligence software company whose public history runs from a focused search product to a broader set of customer-specific software and AI services. Decrypt was its first product; later engineering accounts describe Serra and a shift toward shared infrastructure supporting several applications. The company's distinctive commercial feature is the close connection between product development and engineers working with government users.

That model has acquired a wider delivery structure. In April 2026, Vannevar announced a strategic partnership with SMX that combined its data and AI work with an established government contractor's delivery organisation. In June, it reported a FedRAMP High authorisation through Knox Systems. These developments help explain how the business reaches customers, alongside its more familiar product-development story.

Decrypt began with a narrow information problem

In its February 2022 account of product invention, Vannevar described abandoning extended work on an Arabic optical character recognition problem and testing an early version of Decrypt instead. The first version centred on search across a limited data source. The company said an initial three-month pilot, priced at about $25,000 for four users, developed into a $1.3 million contract over roughly four months.

Those figures are the company's historical account, with the customer left unnamed. Their significance is the sequence: a narrowly scoped product entered a small paid engagement and expanded as the supplier learned how users worked. The account is more informative about Vannevar's business model than an abstract claim that it develops AI for national security.

It also reveals a specific product-management choice. The company did not describe winning customers by adding every possible analytical feature. It described moving away from work that users did not consider urgent and concentrating on a problem that justified adoption. For readers following intelligence software, this makes Vannevar an example of a product shaped through repeated customer interaction.

The comparison with Primer's analysis platforms is therefore partly about the way software reaches the user. Both companies address information-intensive work, but a named product category alone says little about how much configuration, embedded engineering or ongoing support sits inside a particular customer relationship.

Why the company moved beyond one product

Vannevar's chief technology officer explained the next stage in an August 2024 engineering article. He described the difficulty of adapting Decrypt to substantially different requirements and the growing friction between mission specialists, product managers and engineers. Forward deployed engineers were introduced to work directly with users and develop new applications, including Serra.

The article also described the next organisational problem: several products could end up recreating the same underlying services. Vannevar's response was to extract shared components into a common platform while preserving room for customer-specific development. The company presented a roughly six-month decision horizon in which new work should become a programme, become a product or be discontinued.

For a commercial audience, this explains the tension inside the model. Embedded work can uncover valuable requirements and secure an early customer, but each additional deployment can consume scarce engineering time. Shared services offer a way to retain what is reusable. The balance between those activities shapes the business more directly than the number of AI features listed on a website.

This is also why services work should not automatically be treated as a weakness or a separate business. In Vannevar's own account, it is part of the process through which products emerge. The commercial question is whether learning from one customer improves the next deployment, rather than requiring an entirely new project each time.

Financing and reported growth tell a dated business story

The company's August 2021 Series A announcement reported $12 million in new funding and said Decrypt had been deployed across nearly a dozen government mission groups since that January. The January 2023 Series B account subsequently reported $75 million in funding, reaching $25 million in revenue and becoming profitable.

The Series B statement explained why outside capital mattered to the product strategy: Vannevar wanted to fund development before government customers paid for every research step. It also identified additional products and a first programme-of-record ambition for Decrypt as priorities at that time. That is a useful historical statement of strategy, rather than evidence that every priority was already achieved in 2023.

A later August 2025 company update said the previous year had produced $80 million in annual contract value and a third consecutive profitable year. It also reported a $1.5 billion valuation. Annual contract value, revenue, profitability and financing valuation are different measures; the company did not publish enough detail in that short update to turn them into a complete financial model.

The 2025 update's reference to the previous year places the $80 million ACV figure in 2024. Keeping that date attached prevents a reader from comparing it directly with another company's 2025 revenue or treating it as Vannevar's sales for the current review year.

Together, these releases establish a venture-backed growth history and management's account of commercial progress. They do not provide a current shareholder register or audited customer-by-customer revenue. Their value for a reader is the dated sequence, with each metric kept on its stated basis.

SMX adds an established delivery channel

The 21 April 2026 SMX partnership announcement provides a named relationship beyond anonymous government customer references. Vannevar said the companies began working together in 2021 on Special Operations Command Pacific open-source intelligence activities and expanded their work in 2025.

The new agreement combined Vannevar's data, AI and analysis capabilities with SMX's government delivery experience and prime contract positions. It described joint deployments supported by mission and technical specialists. This is a specific example of a software supplier using an established contractor's delivery organisation while contributing its own product and domain expertise.

The commercial significance is organisational as much as technical. A customer may need software, integration, training and continuing support in the same engagement. A partnership can divide those functions between organisations with different strengths. The announcement leaves individual contract values and revenue allocation undisclosed, but it identifies why the two businesses see their roles as complementary.

For other intelligence software companies, the example offers a grounded comparison with direct selling. An established prime relationship can provide a route into a wider programme, while the specialist still needs a product that solves a defined problem. That is a different proposition from assuming that the prime's entire customer base becomes the specialist's own addressable revenue.

Knox addresses a separate deployment requirement

On 23 June 2026, Vannevar reported FedRAMP High authorisation through Knox Systems, linking the development to federal access to its homeland-security products. The company described the offering as developed alongside the law-enforcement community. This announcement concerns the environment through which software can be supplied, while the SMX relationship concerns a broader delivery partnership.

The distinction helps locate Vannevar in the commercial ecosystem. Its engineering organisation develops applications; partners can contribute accredited hosting or government delivery capacity. Second Front Systems illustrates another business focused on that deployment layer, allowing readers to compare the roles without treating application vendors and hosting platforms as interchangeable.

The most informative next developments will connect these strands: a named product deployment through the new environment, a documented expansion of the SMX relationship or a customer account of continuing use. Those would show how Vannevar's product-development method translates into repeatable delivery. The available evidence already supports a company profile built around intelligence applications, embedded engineering and partner-assisted access, with performance and financial claims attributed to their public source.
