Robin Radar Systems: bird and drone detection in institutional markets

Robin Radar’s ownership, workforce disclosure, Dutch IRIS contract and US expansion, plus the aviation and wildlife business behind its partner network.

Robin Radar Systems is a Dutch sensor company serving counter-drone, aviation safety and environmental monitoring markets. Its commercial appeal comes from a specialised product that can enter several kinds of purchasing programme: a defence ministry's radar order, an integrator's broader security system, or an airport's wildlife-management project. Those routes involve different buyers, budgets and responsibilities, even when the underlying company is the same.

The strongest recent evidence is a Dutch defence procurement confirmed by the buyer, alongside a larger US office opened in August 2026. Robin's partnerships also show how the company reaches customers through other industrial firms. This profile follows those business relationships without treating every product announcement as a contract.

Corporate identity, ownership and workforce

Robin's current corporate page identifies its headquarters as Delft, Netherlands, and Siete Hamminga as CEO. It traces the commercial company to a 2010 spinout of technology from TNO and identifies Robin as a Parcom company following a 2024 acquisition. That same page describes a staff of 150-plus people without a measurement date. BDI records the statement as an undated lower bound, rather than an exact September 2026 headcount. It is insufficient to calculate annual productivity, hiring growth or the current size of the US workforce. Standalone annual revenue remains unverified from a primary financial statement in this profile.

The headquarters detail also deserves care. Current company information points to Delft, while older documents identify The Hague. Historical releases can remain useful evidence of past transactions without establishing today's office address. For an introduction or a supplier qualification record, the current corporate identity should take priority over a copied directory entry.

Three commercial markets around radar

Robin's product presentation distinguishes IRIS for drone detection and MAX for bird detection. The company addresses aviation, defence and security, as well as wind-farm and environmental work. For sales teams, these markets should remain separate. An airport purchasing wildlife monitoring has different evidence needs from a defence customer selecting a counter-drone sensor. An environmental consultant may value a long observation record and reporting workflow; a system integrator may focus on compatibility, maintenance responsibilities and the delivery package.

The commercial distinction also helps identify prospective partners. A sensor supplier does not necessarily own the entire customer relationship when its radar sits inside another company's system. A project can involve an equipment manufacturer, a prime contractor, an operator and a specialist service provider. Knowing which organisation is responsible for each layer is more useful than labelling all of them as competing radar companies.

The Dutch Ministry of Defence purchase

On 12 December 2025, Robin announced a Dutch Ministry of Defence contract for 100 IRIS radars, commemorated the previous day. The company said the first 50 had already been delivered. The ministry's May 2026 Defence Project Overview adds buyer-side evidence. Its counter-UAS entry says a contract with Robin Radar was signed in November 2025 and that the IRIS radars had been delivered. It discusses vehicle installation separately. That distinction is especially useful when tracking fast-moving procurement. The press date may follow the agreement, and receipt of equipment may precede installation or wider operational acceptance. A credible market record retains those stages instead of assigning every event the date of the most visible announcement.

The ministry's document covers a wider counter-UAS programme involving several suppliers and activities. Its programme budget cannot be treated as Robin's revenue. For assessing Robin's business, the identifiable product and confirmed delivery are solid evidence; the company's own recognised sales still require financial disclosure.

Expanding the US customer relationship

Robin's 27 August 2026 release reports an official opening of a larger Northern Virginia facility on 26 August. It says the space will support 20 additional roles. The same release reports 75% more US IRIS sales in the first half of 2026 than a year earlier and more than 30 IRIS radars deployed across North America during World Cup security operations. These are company-reported measures, without an absolute sales baseline or disclosed order value. US operations expansion.

The additional roles are supported capacity, not evidence that 20 employees had already joined. The sales growth percentage also cannot be converted into dollars without knowing product mix, units and pricing. BDI's assessment is that the office is most informative as an investment in local customer support and industrial relationships.

For a US integrator, local availability can affect how a supplier handles demonstrations, service and ongoing programme work. The next question is the commercial arrangement: direct equipment sales, an authorised channel relationship, integration services or a longer support commitment. A visible local office helps start that discussion but does not answer it.

DroneShield: an integration route

In March 2026, Robin announced a partnership making IRIS available for integration into DroneShield's wider offer, including its DroneSentry-C2 platform. The release describes a product and integration relationship, with no named end-customer award or purchase quantity. Robin–DroneShield partnership.

For market analysis, that makes DroneShield a potential route to customers as well as another company in the counter-drone sector. The relationship does not support an assumption that every DroneShield sale includes Robin equipment. An opportunity still has to specify the selected components and the party responsible for accepting and supporting the complete installation.

Aviation and wildlife: a different buyer chain

Robin's May 2026 King Shaka International Airport announcement identifies HENSOLDT South Africa as prime contractor, Robin as the MAX equipment supplier, and Airports Company South Africa as airport operator. It also describes collaboration with the University of KwaZulu-Natal on bird observations. No contract value is disclosed. King Shaka airport project.

This is a useful relationship map because the airport, integrator and researchers need different things from the same project. A proposal directed only at the airport's purchasing team could overlook the prime contractor's integration responsibility. Conversely, supplying equipment to the integrator does not automatically create a separate research-services contract with the university.

It also shows why Robin's environmental and aviation business should not disappear beneath counter-drone headlines. A company researching its competitors or seeking a distribution relationship needs to understand both established markets and the newer sources of demand.

The next product direction

On 15 June 2026, Robin announced a TNO partnership to industrialise an airborne radar for larger unmanned aircraft. Robin would lead productisation and commercial development using TNO's research foundation. The release describes further maturation for future users, rather than an accepted operational fleet or a disclosed production purchase. Robin–TNO development partnership.

The business implication is a prospective expansion from ground-based sensing into an aircraft payload market with different platform partners and purchasing cycles. The next meaningful signals would be a named platform integration, a customer agreement and a documented delivery milestone. Until then, Robin's confirmed Dutch purchase, US presence and existing partner network provide the firmer basis for commercial decisions.
