Subsea battery service life and the support offer

Subsea cycle-life, shelf-life and environmental ratings cannot be combined into one lifetime promise. A support comparison needs the conditions, unit history and replacement responsibilities behind the figures.

A subsea battery can have a published cycle-life figure, a shelf-life statement and a separate environmental rating. Those statements answer different questions. A commercial buyer needs to preserve the conditions attached to each one before using them to estimate replacement cost or evaluate a support offer.

For marine robotics companies, the important business question is how the battery remains a supported component throughout the customer's ownership period. That includes the evidence used to assess its condition, the records retained for each unit and the arrangements for replacement. A large cycle count alone does not describe the service life of a complete underwater vehicle.

Read the condition attached to the number

Kraken Robotics provides a useful example in its SeaPower technical brochure, carrying a 2024 copyright notice. Its table states more than 2,000 discharge cycles at 80% retention under a heading specifying 0 bar. A separate line states shelf life exceeding five years at 80% retention. The brochure also gives a separate depth rating and qualifies performance by product guidelines and manufacturing tolerances. These are manufacturer claims, not independent lifetime measurements.

The table should therefore travel with its headings and qualifications. Removing the pressure condition from the cycle-life line creates a broader statement than the document supports. Combining that number with the separate depth rating would imply evidence about a combined condition that the quoted table does not provide.

For any supplier, ask for the evidence relevant to the proposed product and the commercial life estimate. The response should identify the tested item, the meaning of the reported retention measure and the conditions represented. The buyer needs an interpretable basis for planning, rather than a number detached from the report that produced it.

Cell evidence and delivered-product evidence have different scope

DNV's public description of recommended practice DNV-RP-0577, edition December 2023, concerns battery-cell degradation and the effects of use, environment and calendar time on state of health. It explicitly excludes several other properties, including safety, energy density and maximum capacity. The publicly accessible scope establishes that boundary; the complete subscription document is not the basis of this article.

That distinction matters when a product presentation cites testing at several levels. Evidence about cells can inform an engineering assessment without establishing every property of an assembled battery or the vehicle containing it. The commercial file should identify which conclusions are supported at each level.

Ask the supplier to separate the component evidence from the acceptance evidence for the delivered unit. This makes it easier to identify what remains dependent on the vehicle integrator, and prevents a procurement team from treating a reference to a testing document as an all-purpose product approval.

State the replacement decision in business terms

A support offer should explain how the customer decides that a battery requires assessment, service or replacement. That decision may depend on an agreed condition measure, a manufacturer recommendation or a documented finding. The supplier should state the applicable process without leaving the customer to infer it from a marketing claim.

The distinction between a planning assumption and a contractual commitment is especially important. A budget may assume a replacement in a particular year to estimate ownership cost. That assumption is not a warranty unless the agreement explicitly makes it one.

An illustrative survey business compares two offers over a five-year ownership period. One proposal includes periodic assessment and a priced replacement option; another includes only the initial battery. Their initial prices cannot be compared fairly until the customer identifies the later work and the commercial responsibility for it. No particular replacement year follows automatically from a brochure's shelf-life statement.

Calendar history belongs beside usage history

A service record should make the age and history of the delivered unit understandable. A battery supplied as a replacement may be newly manufactured, previously held as stock or refurbished under an agreed process. Those descriptions can have different implications for the evidence the customer expects to receive.

The buyer should ask which dates and status records accompany each unit and how the supplier handles a transfer between customers or projects. A delivery date alone may not explain the full history relevant to the agreed support assessment.

This is also important for spare inventory. Purchasing several units at the start of a programme can secure supply, but it can also tie up capital in stock that needs continuing management. The commercial plan should describe the supplier's documented storage and review requirements, the responsible organisation and any included support. This article does not prescribe storage or charging procedures.

Health information must remain interpretable

If the product provides a health estimate or diagnostic report, the customer should understand what the reported value represents. Ask which product version and assessment method produced it, whether the method has changed and what the supplier considers an unresolved or invalid result.

A dashboard percentage can be useful for routine management while still requiring specialist interpretation for a warranty decision. The contract should identify who performs that interpretation and how a customer can challenge an assessment that appears inconsistent with the retained evidence.

Preserve the original report alongside the supplier's conclusion. If a software update changes the way condition is estimated, the support team should explain whether earlier and later values can be compared directly. Otherwise an apparent improvement or deterioration may reflect the reporting method rather than the physical history of the unit.

The supporting equipment has its own lifecycle

Kraken's current SeaPower product description presents batteries together with battery-management and supporting equipment. That product structure is a reminder to examine the complete supported offer, rather than budgeting only for the replaceable energy-storage component.

For a purchased system, identify which support tools, software versions and service capabilities remain necessary over time. A replacement battery may be available while the customer's existing support equipment needs an update. The supplier should make that dependency visible before the buyer commits to a long ownership period.

The quotation should also explain what happens when a supporting component becomes unavailable. A compatible successor, an upgrade programme and a requirement to replace a larger part of the system have different cost implications. Ask for the commercial response and notification process, without assuming that a future product will be interchangeable simply because it belongs to the same family.

Separate technical findings from warranty remedies

A finding that capacity has changed does not, by itself, determine who pays. Warranty coverage depends on the actual agreement, its definitions and the evidence needed to make a claim. Keep the technical assessment and the commercial remedy visible as separate steps.

The buyer should understand the expected response time, the location of assessment and whether temporary replacement equipment is part of the offer. A favourable warranty outcome can still interrupt a customer's project if there is no practical continuity arrangement.

For suppliers, a clear support process can be a meaningful part of the sales proposition. It lets a customer estimate staff effort and downtime exposure more realistically. Claims about a lower lifetime cost become more credible when supported by a defined service package and explicit assumptions, rather than an unexplained comparison with another battery type.

Use service evidence to compare the whole offer

The Kraken Robotics profile provides company context for the product example. The broader choice between owning equipment and contracting a result is examined in the uncrewed-vessel service comparison. In either model, battery support is part of a continuing delivery capability.

A useful purchasing file therefore preserves the conditions of lifetime claims, identifies the evidence for each delivered unit and prices the assessment and replacement process. It also records which responsibilities remain with the vehicle integrator or customer. That is a stronger basis for a support decision than treating a single cycle count as the service life of an entire subsea system.
