Varjo: XR-4 headsets and the simulation supplier ecosystem

Varjo supplies mixed-reality headsets, software and support for simulation. A public Rheinmetall case study shows how its hardware fits into a larger training system.

Varjo supplies the headset and software layer inside professional simulation systems. Its commercial position is clearest in the relationship between its XR-4 product family and specialist integrators such as Rheinmetall and Entrol. The Finnish company contributes a way to combine digital surroundings with physical equipment; the integrator builds the training device, supplies application content and manages its relationship with the customer. That makes Varjo relevant to defence businesses even when its name is absent from the title of a government contract.

The current portfolio also extends beyond a headset sale. Varjo Base provides the supporting software, paid Pro licences add capabilities, and Varjo Alpha supplies engineering assistance. This combination creates several possible relationships with the same simulator manufacturer: component supplier, software vendor and integration partner. The useful question is how those relationships become repeatable across a customer's installed systems.

The company behind the display

Varjo's financing history establishes external institutional backing without revealing a complete current ownership structure. Its September 2022 financing announcement disclosed a US$40 million Series D involving existing investors EQT Ventures, Atomico, Volvo Car Tech Fund and Lifeline Ventures, alongside Mirabaud and Foxconn. The release framed the funding around professional hardware, software and cloud services across several industries.

That dated financing is useful context for the company's enterprise origins. It does not establish its 2026 cash balance or the present ownership percentage of any investor. The release's page header and announcement dateline also differ by four days; September 2022 is the appropriate historical reference unless that distinction matters to a transaction chronology.

For a commercial reader, the combination of financial investors and industrial participants is more informative than applying an unsupported employee-based SME label. Varjo's public product strategy is specialised, but its ownership and financial scale need to be understood separately from the size of the headset market it addresses.

Three headsets, different integration choices

The XR-4 catalogue separates the standard XR-4, XR-4 Focal Edition and XR-4 Secure Edition. The Focal Edition emphasises mixed reality involving real physical objects, while the Secure Edition is offered for environments with more restrictive connectivity and procurement requirements. Varjo describes the latter as assembled in Finland and provides configurations intended for offline use.

Those distinctions divide the product family by deployment circumstances, not simply by a good-better-best consumer hierarchy. A simulator that retains physical controls has a different visual integration problem from an entirely virtual learning environment. A customer with an isolated computing environment also has a different software support problem from an open research laboratory.

The catalogue includes supporting computers, accessories and integration services. Consequently, an apparent comparison between headset prices can omit much of the actual system. The commercially meaningful comparison includes the workstation, supported application, installation work and maintenance arrangement. None of these catalogue descriptions independently establishes approval for a particular classified programme.

Why the 2026 refresh matters commercially

On 24 November 2025, Varjo explained the refresh behind its 2026-edition XR-4 products. Chief product officer Patrick Wyatt described changes informed by customer deployments, including ergonomics, cameras and the connection hardware. He also stressed that headsets increasingly sit within larger training systems and that the company was adapting its software and engineering support accordingly.

The business implication is a shift in what counts as a successful product release. For an integrator, continuity and maintainability can matter as much as a new display specification. A revised headset must fit into a system whose other components may follow different replacement schedules.

This makes product migration a substantial part of the supplier relationship. A simulator manufacturer needs to know whether a hardware refresh requires new integration work, changes its support obligations or affects an existing installation. Varjo's refresh explanation is evidence of attention to those issues; it is not a public schedule for replacing every customer's previous headset generation.

Rheinmetall demonstrates the integrator route

Varjo's Rheinmetall case study describes Rheinmetall Electronics using the refreshed XR-4 Focal Edition in driving simulators. It includes comments from Rheinmetall's training business about the headset's place in its systems. The page is a named industrial relationship, although it does not publish a government buyer, purchase quantity or Varjo contract value.

That relationship matters because Rheinmetall owns a different part of the value chain. Its customer is purchasing a training capability assembled from several technologies. Varjo can therefore participate in a larger programme through a system manufacturer's selection, without becoming the prime contractor.

For neighbouring suppliers, the case illustrates a market in which the headset, physical simulator, content and system support can remain separate businesses. A company supplying visual software or workstation infrastructure could work alongside Varjo; another display supplier would compete for a more direct substitution. Treating every simulation company as a headset competitor would obscure those distinctions.

Entrol shows why engineering services are part of the product

The Entrol case study adds a second named integration example. Varjo describes the Spanish simulator manufacturer using its headsets in a cockpit-based mixed reality system and a separate hoist-operator training station. The same case documents a two-day Varjo Alpha visit to Entrol's Madrid premises to examine integration problems in a showroom simulator.

The valuable evidence is the combination of a customer, identifiable products and a specific engineering engagement. It shows why purchasing the component does not eliminate system-level work. Varjo's specialists and Entrol's engineers had to consider the computing environment and the physical installation together.

Commercially, services of this kind can shorten the distance between product evaluation and a system that the integrator can demonstrate to its own customers. The case does not disclose whether the visit was separately billed or included in another arrangement. It supports the existence of an engineering relationship, while the revenue model remains undisclosed.

Software introduces a second purchasing decision

The Varjo Base page describes a free tier and a paid Pro tier. Pro adds advanced mixed reality, data and integration capabilities; the public page offers annual and perpetual licensing options and says Pro is included with Secure Edition devices. Software entitlement is therefore a separate consideration from possession of compatible hardware.

A public licence-update support notice makes the lifecycle issue concrete. It distinguishes newer Pro arrangements, offline packages and legacy entitlements attached to earlier purchases. Some configurations require a software update while others do not.

For a fleet owner, that distinction affects how upgrades are planned across systems bought at different times. For an integrator, it affects what must be specified in its own customer offer. This is a business dependency that a hardware-only comparison misses: two installations using the same headset family can have different software rights and support requirements.

A dated military programme reference

Varjo announced selection for the US Army's RVCT Air programme on 29 August 2023. The announcement concerned a special variant of the XR-3 Focal Edition. It establishes a historical military training reference and an earlier generation's role within a wider synthetic training effort.

It should remain attached to that product generation and date. The current availability of XR-4 does not turn the 2023 release into evidence that the Army subsequently ordered XR-4 replacements. A follow-on award, integration announcement or customer statement would add that missing link.

The distinction is useful when assessing adoption. A supplier can have a credible programme history while a newer product is still building its own customer record. What to watch next

Varjo's most revealing future signals would be repeat integrations by named simulator manufacturers, documented movement between headset generations and more explicit software or support arrangements. These would show how individual installations develop into a durable supplier position.

The company sits at the intersection of specialist hardware and enterprise software, a different role from the deployment infrastructure described in the Second Front Systems profile. Comparing their places in a customer's workflow is more useful than grouping both under a broad defence software label.

The accessible evidence supports a professional XR supplier with several concrete integration routes. It does not expose current company revenue, a complete ownership table or independently measured training outcomes. The commercial case rests on those named industrial relationships and the continuing work of maintaining them.
