Umbra is a US space technology company with three connected commercial activities: selling radar imagery, supplying spacecraft hardware and participating in customer satellite projects. Its own constellation gives it a data-service business and a reference platform for technology that it also offers to others. That makes Umbra relevant to imagery buyers, analytics companies, satellite manufacturers and government programme teams.
The distinction between those customers matters. An organisation buying an image needs access, delivery and appropriate usage rights. A spacecraft builder buying a component needs hardware supply and support. A partner developing a joint satellite offering is entering a more extensive engineering and commercial relationship. Umbra’s public record contains examples of each.
Ownership and leadership
Umbra’s company-authored profile identifies a privately held business founded in 2015 and headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. Its own About page states that the company is entirely US owned, engineered and operated. That is a corporate ownership statement; it does not disclose the identities or individual percentages of shareholders.
The current leadership page names co-founder David Langan as chief executive, Todd Master as chief strategy officer and Matt Speitel as chief financial officer. It also identifies the company’s California and Virginia locations. An exact current employee count and absolute annual revenue are not established in the reviewed sources.
The important commercial point is that Umbra remains a private supplier with a published leadership structure and a US industrial footprint. It should not be confused with the unrelated homewares business or other software companies carrying the same name when researching ownership and financial records.
Data and hardware are separate offerings
Umbra’s remote-sensing business sells synthetic aperture radar imagery. Its offering includes different imaging products intended to support observation and monitoring. Radar’s relationship with cloud cover and darkness is part of the value proposition, but Umbra’s claims of market-leading performance should be treated as manufacturer positioning rather than an independently established ranking.
The Space Systems catalogue addresses another customer. It lists products across spacecraft power, attitude control, networking, communications and separation systems. Umbra explains that these products derive from hardware developed for its own missions and are now offered to outside customers.
That creates a useful distinction between internal use and external commercial adoption. Hardware used in the company’s constellation can provide a relevant reference history, while a sale into another customer’s spacecraft still requires its own configuration, integration and acceptance process. The existence of a catalogue does not disclose production volumes or the names of every purchaser.
For satellite suppliers, this means Umbra may be a customer in one area and a competitor in another. The relationship depends on the subsystem and programme, rather than a single label applied to the entire company.
The NRO contract is a buyer-confirmed data relationship
The National Reconnaissance Office’s August 2026 release names Umbra Lab, Capella Space and ICEYE US as recipients of Radar Commercial Augmentation contracts. The agency connects those awards to an assessment process begun in 2022, involving modelling, simulation and demonstrations in orbit.
This is evidence of a specific government purchasing relationship. The agency does not disclose individual contract values or identify one recipient as the preferred supplier for all requirements. BDI’s NRO radar award analysis explains that wider programme context.
Umbra’s own announcement adds that its contract has a one-year base period and two one-year options. It describes supplying imagery and access to collection capacity. Those terms identify a service arrangement with possible extensions, not three years of revenue already recognised.
The same release reports a new manufacturing facility in California and announced engineering expansion in Reston. These are company statements about infrastructure supporting the business; floor area alone does not reveal spacecraft output or the proportion of capacity committed to any customer.
e-GEOS connects Umbra to an established data channel
A March 2024 e-GEOS release describes non-exclusive worldwide distribution rights for Umbra radar data. It allows e-GEOS to order new collections and archive imagery, and to combine Umbra material with other data in value-added products.
This is partner evidence of a specific route to customers. Umbra supplies data, while e-GEOS contributes distribution and application expertise. Non-exclusive rights also mean the arrangement does not establish e-GEOS as the only route through which customers can purchase Umbra imagery.
In its 2025 year review, e-GEOS described a strategic collaboration combining COSMO-SkyMed and Umbra data with its analytical software. That expands the relationship’s public description beyond straightforward resale into developing information products.
The commercial value of such combinations lies in the final customer output. A buyer monitoring infrastructure or environmental change may prefer a service drawing on several constellations rather than managing each imagery source separately. Umbra can participate in that market through a partner without becoming the sole provider of every element.
Reflex Aerospace illustrates a satellite partnership
The April 2025 Reflex Aerospace agreement concerns a different product. The companies announced plans to combine an Umbra radar payload with a Reflex satellite platform, with joint integration in Germany and a first launch targeted for 2027.
The disclosed relationship is a collaboration to create an offering for European customers. The announcement does not identify a signed national fleet order or confirm that the planned satellite has launched. Its commercial significance is the division of work between a radar specialist and a spacecraft manufacturer.
That division gives prospective customers another way to access Umbra technology: through a dedicated satellite solution rather than imagery purchased from Umbra’s own constellation. It also creates different questions about delivery responsibility, support and industrial participation.

Research and teaming create additional product paths
Umbra’s March 2025 NGA announcement describes a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement. The public scope concerns research and development around data products and collection capabilities. It establishes a collaboration, rather than disclosing a procurement value or a production order.
The Site3D teaming announcement with Array Labs and Raytheon provides another example. The parties described combining radar data and processing expertise to develop three-dimensional geospatial products. The January 2025 announcement presented commercial rollout as a future step.
These projects show why Umbra’s opportunity is broader than selling individual images. Partners can turn its data into a distinct product or help adapt its technology to a new customer requirement. The commercial outcome depends on what subsequently reaches customers and how the resulting work is divided.
Open data lowers the barrier to evaluation
Umbra’s open-data programme provides public material for research and experimentation. Its catalogue identifies a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence. This gives potential users a visible starting point for evaluating real data without implying access to all commercial collections.
For an analytics developer, public samples can help establish whether radar data is useful to a proposed application before entering a larger commercial relationship. The relevant next step is validating the application against its intended customer requirement, not assuming that access alone creates a viable service.
Umbra’s public position is consequently broader than a single radar-imagery supplier. Its data, hardware and partnership businesses connect to different buyers, with different evidence of maturity. Named orders, delivered components and completed partner milestones will provide the clearest measure of how those activities develop.
