ModalAI: flight computing and the drone component market

ModalAI supplies VOXL computing, flight controllers and development aircraft, with named OEM relationships and public evidence that separates component eligibility from complete-drone approval.

ModalAI is a San Diego company supplying the computing and control products inside drones, together with development aircraft that demonstrate its technology. Its customers can therefore include other aircraft manufacturers as well as organisations buying a complete ModalAI platform. That position is particularly relevant to smaller OEMs deciding how much of an aircraft's electronics and software they should develop themselves.

The company describes itself as a 2018 spinout from Qualcomm. Co-founder Chad Sweet previously led Qualcomm's robotics research effort. This background helps explain the company's emphasis on integrated computing and communications, but it does not establish that Qualcomm owns ModalAI today. The current ownership percentages are not public in the reviewed material.

ModalAI's commercial proposition is strongest when viewed as a reusable product and support environment. The value to an OEM is not simply a board on a parts list: it can include documentation, software continuity and assistance integrating that board into a product customers will actually use.

The main product families

The company catalogue distinguishes VOXL computing platforms, Flight Core controllers, development kits, development aircraft and supporting components. Radios, image sensors, power products and accessories sit alongside the principal boards. This gives ModalAI several possible points of entry into an OEM's bill of materials.

VOXL 2 and VOXL 2 Mini are computing and autonomy products. Flight Core is a flight-controller family. ModalAI's Flight Core overview says it can be used independently or alongside VOXL products. At a commercial level, that distinction lets a customer select a narrower component relationship or a more integrated computing environment.

The catalogue also includes ready-to-mount flight decks and development kits. Their role is to reduce the amount of initial integration work between selecting components and evaluating a complete platform. Buying a development kit, however, is not the same commercial event as selecting a component for recurring production. The latter would normally depend on a customer's product release and purchasing schedule.

For a component business, the installed product base can matter over several years. Changes to software, documentation or replacement parts affect customers that have already committed engineering effort. That makes continuity of support a meaningful part of comparison with other electronics suppliers, alongside the initial purchase price.

Why ModalAI also sells aircraft

ModalAI announced Starling 2 and Starling 2 Max in April 2024. The announcement describes development drones using VOXL 2 and the VOXL software development kit, supported by documentation and code resources.

These aircraft give developers a common starting point. A team can assess the software and computing environment in a platform supplied by the same company, instead of first creating an entirely new aircraft. The commercial purpose is partly to encourage adoption of the underlying product family.

That creates an important distinction when comparing ModalAI with a conventional aircraft manufacturer. A development aircraft can generate direct sales while also serving as a reference product for customers that ultimately build something different. Its significance cannot be measured only by the number of finished aircraft sold under ModalAI's own name.

Stinger and Seeker appear elsewhere in the catalogue as complete aircraft offerings. Their existence expands the company's role beyond bare components, but each product's stated use and eligibility needs to be read separately. A familiar electronics brand inside a drone does not make every aircraft using those electronics the same commercial or approved configuration.

Named manufacturers provide adoption evidence

ModalAI's Inspired Flight case study describes the aircraft maker adopting its Flight Core controller. The case study includes named customer testimony and discusses component supply, integration support and the manufacturer's effort to serve government-related demand.

This is a useful example of an OEM relationship, with an important evidence boundary: it is a supplier-published case study without a visible publication date. Its statements about all Inspired Flight models should not be treated as an independently checked description of that manufacturer's entire September 2026 catalogue. The durable point is the documented relationship and the purchasing problem it addressed.

A July 2023 partnership announcement identifies XTEND's selection of VOXL 2 for its drones. The companies describe distinct contributions: ModalAI's computing platform and XTEND's own software and aircraft environment.

The XTEND example shows that a component supplier's technology can operate underneath another company's differentiated user experience. The public release does not disclose component prices, minimum volumes or exclusivity. Those omissions leave the financial size of the relationship open, while still establishing a specific product-selection milestone.

Blue UAS evidence belongs to exact products

On 12 August 2025, ModalAI announced additional Blue UAS Cleared aircraft and Framework components. The release separated the aircraft list from the component framework and identified products in each category.

That separation should remain intact in a company profile. A framework-listed flight controller is an input available to an integrator. A cleared aircraft is a particular complete system. Neither category establishes an unlimited approval of everything the manufacturer might subsequently develop.

The current DIU Framework page directs readers to DCMA's Blue List during the programme transition. A historical ModalAI release remains evidence of what the company announced at the time; a present purchasing decision requires the current entry and configuration. Research funding and the next product generation

The official SBA portfolio lists a 2025 Army Phase II award of $1,999,891 for a project titled “VOXL 3 - Maximizing Image Processing per Gram.” This provides a specific public record of funded development associated with the next product generation.

The award abstract describes planned work and prospective unit volumes. Those projections should not be counted as completed shipments or a government commitment to buy the forecast quantities. The record is valuable because it distinguishes a research programme from the existing catalogue.

ModalAI's October 2025 FAA submission describes its component business across commercial and government applications. Its presence in that public consultation supports a broader market orientation than defense alone, without implying that its preferred regulatory outcome was adopted.

Employees, ownership and the company outlook

The SBA portfolio records 45 employees for Modalai Inc, but gives no visible as-of date. This should be displayed as an undated recorded figure, not a precise current workforce total. ModalAI's company-controlled LinkedIn profile labels it privately held and identifies San Diego as headquarters. A verified annual revenue figure was not found.

ModalAI's most revealing future signals would be recurring OEM selections, the commercial release of products now in funded development and evidence that customers retain the platform across aircraft generations. Those would show whether its computing ecosystem is becoming a durable part of other manufacturers' products. The existing record already supports a distinct role: supplying components, software support and reference platforms that can reduce the work required to bring another company's drone to market.

The FAA submission's accessible primary text supports only the company's dated identity and stated component business; no legal conclusions are inferred. Blue UAS claims are attributed to the August 2025 issuer announcement, with DIU's current transition notice identified; individual live DCMA configuration entries were not independently confirmed.
